We are excited to be stocking the work of Deborah Manson - Deborah is a textile artist who loves colour, and is interested in natural sources of coloring and printing fabrics. She enjoys making her work as sustainable as possible by using craft processes and methods such as natural dye, print hand stitch and using fabrics from waste streams. She often looks to mid twentieth century artists and movements for visual inspiration.

These cushions first caught my eye when Deborah brought some to Atelier 51 to display alongside Silvia K's ceramics for the Open Studios event. The natural dyes and bold shapes worked so well with the terracotta ceramics and combine dynamic and fresh inspiration with traditional dyeing and patchwork techniques.

The pink tone Deborah uses is Madder, a dye derived from roots of the Madder plant which has been used for over 5,000 years and the yellow is Weld, another plant based dye used historically. Her work also features repurposed and vintage linen and cotton with feather filling.

FEATURED MAKER - SILVIA K

SHOP NEWS, ARTISTS, ONLINE NEWSMeghan Limbrick

So Silvia K is our Maker of the Week!⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀
Silvia's ideas are fuelled by her research into ceramic ware from sources as diverse as Spanish drug jars to Iraqi dinner plates. Her collections are contemporary interpretation of old artefacts.⠀⠀
All pieces in her latest range are made by hand in Silvia’s favorite terracotta clay that has been fired to mid temperature to give it a beautiful rich red colour. The iron in the clay finds its way through the grey-blue tin glaze and results in uniquely varying waves of speckles around the edges of the ware. The simple decorative quality of a coloured line is achieved through the use of a palette of complementary colours.⠀⠀

ATELIER 51 is a studio space home to designer-makers Elaine Bolt, Silvia K, Rhoda K Baker and Sarah Young as well as a headquarters for Tutton & Young who run the successful shows MADE London, MADE Brighton and Brighton Art Fair.

We are now launching the ATELIER 51 STUDIO SHOP, which will feature work from our resident designer-makers alongside other outstanding artists, craftspeople and designers, some of whom have exhibited at MADE. Specialising in British handmade work, we aim to highlight the individual makers and their processes as a way of inviting the viewer into their world. As well as showcasing a range of work from our hand-picked artisans, we will be hosting special events, and working closely with makers on collaborative projects and pieces to be sold exclusively at ATELIER 51.

Alongside the physical shop we will also be starting an ATELIER 51 online retail space where you can buy work from all our featured artists as well as catch up on news from our studios and find out more about the stories behind the pieces.
